Shomi Kaiser granted bail in attempted murder case

The High Court has granted bail to former president of the E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (E-CAB) and actress Shomi Kaiser in the murder attempt case of the capital’s Uttara Purba Police Station, which is centered on the anti-discrimination student movement. Declaring the rule issued on her bail appropriate, the High Court bench of Justice Abu Taher Md. Saifur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury gave the verdict on Wednesday.
Assistant Attorney General ABM Ibrahim Khalil confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post.
Barrister Hamidul Misbah heard on behalf of Shomi Kaiser in the court. Deputy Attorney General Zisan Haider and Assistant Attorney General ABM Ibrahim Khalil heard on behalf of the state.

Assistant Attorney General ABM Ibrahim Khalil confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post. He said that an application will be filed with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on Shomi Kaiser’s bail.
The High Court granted Shomi Kaiser three months’ bail on December 12 last year. The court also issued a rule. Later, in view of the state’s application, the Appellate Division suspended his bail and ordered the settlement of the rule.

On November 9 last year, the court sent Shomi Kaiser to jail after remand. Earlier, on the night of November 5, he was arrested from house number 53, Road number 6, Sector 4, Uttara. Later, his three-day remand was granted.

It is known that during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 18, a businessman named Ishtiaq Mahmud and others participated in the program. Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League attacked and fired in front of Azampur Nawab Habibullah High School in Sector 4 of Uttara Purba Police Station area. During this time, Ishtiaq was shot in the stomach. He received treatment at Evercare Hospital.

In this incident, Ishtiaq Mahmud filed a case on charges of attempted murder with Uttara Purba Police Station on September 29. Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and 126 others were named as accused in the case. Kaushik Hossain Taposh is accused number 9 and Shomi Kaiser is accused number 24 in the case.
